Vans has teamed up with Dutch artist Parra to bring a fresh take on the classic OTW by Vans Old Skool 36 sneaker. This collaboration rekindles Parra’s long-standing relationship with Vans, dating back to his skateboarding sponsorship days in the early 1990s, even before his artwork became a staple in galleries and museums. This project revives that original connection with a twist, giving a new look to the beloved sneaker.
The Old Skool 36 gets a makeover, blending soft suede with Parra’s distinctive wavy colorblocking and asymmetric designs. The color palette is kept clean, letting the materials do the talking. Look closely, and you’ll find unique typography on custom tongue labels and mismatched footbeds, with a playful reminder: “Don’t forget to skate in these.” This nods to the sneaker’s skateboarding roots.
When it comes to functionality, the sneaker doesn’t disappoint. It includes Sola Foam ADC insoles for comfort, complemented by a vulcanized sole and Vans’ signature waffle outsole for grip. Matte foxing highlights the shoe’s edges, while custom heel scabs add a finishing touch that ties into the collaboration’s theme.
Adding another layer to this partnership, Parra directed his own video campaign, giving fans a glimpse into his surreal aesthetic and creative process. The video offers a personal look at how Parra’s vision for the shoes came to life, beautifully aligning with the collection’s vibe.
Mark your calendars: the OTW by Vans x Parra Old Skool 36 drops on January 22, priced at $130 USD. For more culture and fashion news, stay connected with VZN.
