Chanel is making waves in the world of contemporary art with the unveiling of Espace Gabrielle Chanel, a game-changing addition to Shanghai’s cultural scene. Nestled within the Power Station of Art, this remarkable 18,000-square-foot library is mainland China’s first public hub solely focused on contemporary art. It boasts an impressive collection of over 50,000 books and audio editions, setting the stage for art enthusiasts and researchers alike.
The vision for the space comes to life through the work of Japanese architect Kazunari Sakamoto, who has artfully blended stability and fluidity, drawing parallels to the nearby Huangpu River. Beyond the innovative library, the Chanel-backed expansion includes a revamped exhibition hall, a theater, a design center, and a terrace offering scenic river views.
This initiative, a flagship project of the Chanel Culture Fund in Asia, stems from a fruitful collaboration with PSA, part of their Next Cultural Producer program launched in 2021. This program is dedicated to nurturing burgeoning talent in Chinese craft, architecture, and theater.
Yana Peel, Chanel’s president for arts, culture, and heritage, shared insights with ARTnews, emphasizing that Espace Gabrielle Chanel reflects the brand’s commitment to cultural exchange and innovation. Instead of isolated projects, Chanel prefers strategic collaborations, working alongside leading institutions such as Seoul’s Leeum Museum of Art, MCA Chicago, Centre Pompidou in Paris, and London’s National Portrait Gallery.
