YouTube is gearing up to expand the potential of its Shorts feature by allowing creators to make videos three times longer than before. Set to roll out on October 15, this update will enable content creators to produce YouTube Shorts with a maximum length of 3 minutes, compared to the previous 60 seconds.
With this change, Todd Sherman, Director of Product Management for YouTube Shorts, emphasized that longer videos will enhance storytelling by offering more room for creativity and engagement. Sherman discussed this in a blog post, noting it as a highly requested feature from creators. This move puts YouTube in line with TikTok, which transitioned from 60-second to 3-minute videos back in 2021. Currently, TikTok allows its users to upload videos up to 10 minutes long, a move aimed at vying with YouTube’s hold on longer-form content.
The new 3-minute limit for YouTube Shorts will apply to both square and vertical videos, yet pre-existing clips won’t be impacted. YouTube aims to refine its recommendation system for these longer Shorts soon. For users less interested in Shorts, YouTube will allow you to adjust your feed preferences, minimizing the display of Shorts through settings accessed via the three-dot menu on the homepage feed.
Additionally, some interesting features are on the horizon. YouTube has updated the Shorts player to be more streamlined, enhancing focus on content. Now, users can discover trending videos worldwide through the new Shorts trends page on mobile. Plus, they’ll soon preview comments directly from the Shorts feed, enriching the interaction experience.
Another exciting development is the introduction of templates within YouTube Shorts, encouraging creativity by matching clips with popular sounds and trends. Creators can tap “Remix” on a Short and select “Use this template” to get started. Furthermore, access to YouTube content directly from the Shorts camera will simplify the remixing of favorite clips.
YouTube is set to integrate Google DeepMind’s Veo AI model into Shorts, promising creators even more vivid and unique video backgrounds. Sherman elaborated on the potential for “dreamier” Shorts, highlighting the transformative possibilities for creators.
Currently, more than 2 billion logged-in users watch YouTube Shorts monthly, according to Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, underscoring the format’s explosive growth. This augmentation to Shorts not only diversifies options for creators but continues to challenge platforms like TikTok.
