After crafting a dazzling display on Ibaraki’s rice terraces, teamLab returns with a fresh exhibition in Osaka. They’ve transformed a former urban site into a vibrant grassland, showcasing their project, “teamLab: Field of Wind, Rain, and Sun.” Commissioned by Can Can Factory, this installation melds art with the upgraded premises, offering a tranquil respite amidst the industrial landscape. It brings back natural elements like wind, rain, and sunlight, making them central to the experience.
The exhibition has ties to teamLab Phenomena, a novel museum slated to debut in Abu Dhabi. The concept revolves around environmental interactions. As per Takashi Kudo of teamLab, the artworks depend heavily on the environment for their structure and existence, much like elements found naturally rather than objects crafted by humans. This idea links the Osaka exhibition to a broader international art narrative.
A highlight within the exhibition is “Enso of the Sun,” an interactive digital presentation exclusive to certain solar and wind conditions. Situated in the grassland, this artwork creates a complete circular rainbow when viewed from atop a small staircase during sunny noontime, showcasing an interplay between natural sunlight and technical artistry.
Kudo further elaborates on the concept by noting that everyday elements such as air, water, and light become unique artistic phenomena shaped by their surroundings. These creations blur the line between art and nature, continuing to exist only as long as their environmental conditions remain intact.
The “teamLab: Field of Wind, Rain, and Sun” exhibition is uniquely accessible to visitors at A Cafe in the Field At The Can Can Factory, accessible strictly through pre-booked seating at the café’s website. Located at 2-3-28, Iwata-cho, Higashiosaka-shi, Osaka, Japan, the exhibition proudly displays the harmony between art and nature, just as the teamLab ethos intends.
