Milanese brand Stilnovo has teamed up with Japanese designer Shigeaki Asahara to introduce a new reading lamp named “Torino.” Launching today, this lamp showcases the rich history and dual influences of its creator, who has long navigated the design waters between Italy and Japan.
The “Torino” lamp represents a blend of technical prowess and refined aesthetics, mirroring the duality of Asahara’s professional journey. Born in Japan, Asahara has spent significant time in both his home country and Italy, with each locale leaving a lasting impact on his design philosophy. The name “Torino,” translating to Turin, reflects this marriage of diverse elements. Technologically, the lamp draws from Japanese innovation, while the aesthetics are steeped in the historic architecture of Turin, particularly inspired by the Piazza Vittorio Veneto. According to Asahara, the area’s orthogonal streets with straightforward lines and austere decorations profoundly influenced the lamp’s design.
Beyond its simple yet elegant form, the Torino lamp offers versatility as a crucial feature. It is equipped with an articulated arm and a rotatable head, allowing for flexible positioning. Additionally, the lamp’s light is dimmable and it can be mounted in multiple ways, including on a solid base, a clamp, or a wall-mounted bracket. The Torino offers six different finishes, catering to diverse stylistic preferences.
Asahara credits Stilnovo for bridging his aesthetic and technical experiences, enabling him to bring the spirit of Turin into his creation. This collaboration merges Asahara’s deep-rooted design principles with the modern functionality that Stilnovo is known for.
The Torino lamp is priced at €286, or approximately $383 USD. For more details, visit the Stilnovo website.
