The recent Spring 2025 runway show from VETEMENTS was a striking blend of boldness and celebrity charm. Opening the event was Travis Scott, followed closely by notable figures like Gigi Hadid, Destroy Lonely, Heidi Klum, and Law Roach. Front-row guests included J Balvin, Normani, and Ice Spice, while the show concluded with Marcia Cross from “Desperate Housewives.” This presentation, aptly named “Time To Clean Up The Mess,” took place in a semi-abandoned mall in Paris, offering a colorful backdrop of deadstock clothing right at the entrance.
Designer Guram Gvasalia crafted a narrative around environmental concerns and the transformation of consumer culture. The collection emphasizes a shift from luxury consumption to a more DIY approach, where individuals creatively reimagine existing clothing. The pieces exuded Guram’s signature quirky flair, featuring DHL’s iconic red-yellow tape transforming into a striking dress on Hadid, a gown composed of a scandalous newspaper, and a neon tee adorned with the Monster Energy logo. Additionally, tags protruding from mini dresses served as a tongue-in-cheek commentary on superficial consumerism.
The collection showcased big-shouldered silhouettes, loose denim, oversized leather coats, and dramatic gowns, reflecting an aesthetic that intentionally embraces imperfection. This approach was meant to counteract the rampant overproduction typical of luxury fashion. Guram’s vision furthers the idea of a contemporary muse characterized by bold style choices, underscored by a sense of belonging to a larger narrative around fashion.
Notably, Guram encouraged creativity among those who might not have the budget for his designs, suggesting that anyone can participate in this fashion conversation using pieces already in their own wardrobe. Even amid criticisms linking his work to Balenciaga, particularly regarding similar designs for dresses, Guram continues to forge his own path in fashion.
