Ghost of Tsushima captivated the gaming world when it debuted in 2020, earning numerous nominations and awards. The much-anticipated sequel, Ghost of Yotei, was recently featured in the State of Play event. This new installment takes players to a different era of Japan, transitioning from the first Mongol invasion in 1274 to the Sengoku period in 1603.
Ghost of Yotei is set around Mount Yotei, situated in modern-day Hokkaido, historically known as Ezo during the Sengoku period. The protagonist for this new adventure is Atsu, with gameplay that feels reminiscent of its predecessor. Essential features like horseback riding and intense swordfights make a return. In the trailer, Atsu carries a Shamisen on her back, and there are notable features of a wolf, possibly indicating a new companion or gameplay mechanic.
Players can look forward to navigating a variety of terrains including grasslands and tundras, adding a layer of danger and beauty to the exploration experience. Just as with Ghost of Tsushima, the sequel invites players to immerse themselves in Japan’s rich landscape at their own pace.
This title marks Sucker Punch Productions’ first project designed specifically for the PlayStation 5, promising significant enhancements. Expect realistic environmental interactions, such as wind affecting grass and vegetation, breathtaking skyboxes filled with stars and auroras, as well as new gameplay mechanics and weapons.
These updates were detailed in a blog post on the PlayStation website by Andrew Goldfarb, Communications Manager at Sucker Punch Productions.
While a specific release date for Ghost of Yotei has not been announced, it is slated for a 2025 release. There is hope that the game will also be available on PC eventually, just like the Director’s Cut of Ghost of Tsushima.
